Donors replace gifts for kids

By Emma Ritch
The Sun News

'Today I'm crying tears of joy. Yesterday, it was tears of grief.'
Barb Mains | Caring 4 Kids director

Hundreds of kids will unwrap their presents today, unaware of the events that stole their Christmas and then compelled people from across the state and nation to restore it.

Caring 4 Kids was overwhelmed with gifts and monetary donations Friday, guaranteeing a happy Christmas to the 150 kids whose presents were stolen and now the extra kids who can be accommodated with the gifts, said director Barb Mains.

"We've got more than we lost," Mains said. "Now we can give them two big toys."

Volunteer Donald Hildreth said local churches, businesses, Grand Strand visitors and even people from other parts of the state have driven in gifts, replacing the CD players, karaoke machines, Barbies, Bratz dolls and the crying baby that one girl desperately wanted.

"When I went to Wal-Mart, there were no Bratz. Then when I got here, they were all here," Mains said.

After the Wednesday night burglary of Caring 4 Kids' storage building, Mains and her team of volunteers were discouraged, baffled at how some-
one could steal Christmas from needy kids and overwhelmed by replacing all the stolen goods. Caring 4 Kids delivers toys to 900 kids throughout Horry County. Fortunately, most presents were delivered and the Marine Corps dropped off many gifts.

"Today I'm crying tears of joy," Mains said. "Yesterday, it was tears of grief."

Myrtle Beach police are still investigating the crime, said Cpl. Michael Bland. Thieves left behind fingerprints and a knife, according to the police report. More than $6,000 worth of toys were stolen, and all the wrapping paper was slashed.

"I hope they catch the crooks," Mains said.

The new storage location at 6302 N. Kings Highway was half-filled with toys piled to the ceiling early Friday afternoon. It was empty when Hildreth, the sole volunteer staffing the place, arrived in the morning. The group will make sure it's empty by nightfall to prevent more theft.

All the extra toys will be put to good use because they were rationing what they had left Friday, Mains said.

"I told the kids that one of Santa's sleighs broke down and he'll send you some more toys on Sunday," Mains said.

The volunteers always find children when delivering meals on Christmas Day who didn't get any presents, she said.

The extra toys will also go to them and to kids throughout the year on other holidays, Mains said.

The donations showed no sign of stopping, as a steady stream of people came in with gifts and money. Many of them wanted to remain anonymous and didn't ask for receipts to claim on their taxes, Hildreth said.

"It's like something you read about at Christmastime," Hildreth said. "I don't believe that God would let something like this happen and not fix it."

When one man found out Caring 4 Kids wasn't in need of any specific toys, he said he'd donate everything in his pockets. It turned out to be $600, Hildreth said.

"I heard you guys got looted. That's horrible," said Mike Swain, who dropped by to donate clothes and toys.

"I'm thankful I didn't get it done on time," said Deni Buffmyer, a member of Surfside Christian Church, as she dropped off gifts for an 11-year-old and a 3-year-old. Many of the gifts from that church were stolen Wednesday night.

It was the stories of the children donating their piggy banks and their own presents that really touched Mains and the other volunteers.

One little girl brought her piggy bank. A boy who received presents from Caring 4 Kids earlier this week tried to give them back, Mains said.

"A woman called this morning and said her quadriplegic son wanted to donate his CD player," Mains said.

Hildreth said he had constant phone calls since he arrived in the empty room at 8 a.m.

"I haven't had time to get a cup of coffee," he said. "The phone was just ringing."

Caring 4 Kids is still looking for some donations.

They're in need of kerosene heaters, blankets, coats, sweaters, Shrek toys, rice and beans.

"Every time we go out, we find people that don't have heat," Mains said.

THEFT | More than $6,000 worth of donated presents taken
Burglars steal holiday gifts

By Emma Ritch
The Sun News

'I can't even conceive somebody would steal from a child. ...They had to know where [the toys] were going. It would take an evil person.'
Barb Mains | Caring 4 Kids program director

The thieves who almost stole Christmas from 900 kids Wednesday night weren't counting on two things: the resiliency of Barb Mains and the generosity of the people of Horry County.

Mains, director of Caring 4 Kids, and her volunteers walked into their storage facility Thursday morning to find weeks of hard work ruined. More than $6,000 worth of gifts were gone, and thieves slashed the wrapping paper on all the gifts that remained.

"Every kid on that list is going to have a Christmas, no matter what we have to do," Mains said Thursday.

Mains and the volunteers couldn't let down the kids, many of whom are from the rural areas of Horry County, including Green Sea and Nichols. After all, some of those kids from needy households have depended on Caring 4 Kids for 15 years and wouldn't get presents otherwise, Mains said.

"I can't even conceive somebody would steal from a child," Mains said. "They had to know where [the toys] were going. It would take an evil person."

As she re-wrapped gifts, Mains was quick to point out that it could have been worse.

The first miracle was that all but 150 gifts had been delivered by Wednesday, Mains said.

The second was when the U.S. Marine Corps, which runs Toys for Tots, heard about the theft early Thursday, the group donated an 18-foot truck full of toys.

"Within an hour they were here with a big truckful," Mains said. "... The Marines will save you. They saved us."

Miracle three: The thieves didn't take everything. They might have found the air hockey table and the 18 bicycles a little to heavy to sneak off with, Mains said.

Still, there was too much to do with the time left, volunteers said. They were in search of replacement gifts and had to load and deliver the remaining toys.

"We're not even going to have time to wrap them now," said volunteer Trisha Smith. "The mommas are going to have to do it."

Mains cried Thursday as she and the other volunteers surveyed the room off U.S. 501 in Myrtle Beach. All of what she called the best toys - the Bratz dolls, the Barbies, the CD players, the karaoke machines - were gone. The thieves even took the radio that volunteers listened to while organizing gifts.

Thieves tried to kick in the metal side door late Wednesday or early Thursday, cracking it but ultimately failing. Then they hopped the barbed-wire fence to take a cinder block to the wooden back door, creating a hole that they used to unlock the door, the police report said.

The building was donated for Caring 4 Kids' use this holiday by Woodmen of the World, a nonprofit life insurance group.

Julie Brannock, the treasurer of Woodmen of the World lodge, said they would replace the doors with stronger, commercial-grade doors. Still, Mains and the volunteers scrambled to get all the toys out of the building Thursday so the thieves would have nothing left to steal if they returned.

"[Thieves] can either re-gift them, or try to pawn them, or use them for their own personal goods," said police spokesman Capt. David Knipes. Knipes said pawn shops are required to turn in the pawn slips, which could help police catch the thieves.

Also, police took fingerprints from the doors, which Knipes said could be helpful. The thieves also left a knife, the police report said.

"I never imagined you could pawn a doll," Mains said.

Smith said thieves likely spotted volunteers unloading donations from Surfside Christian Church on Wednesday night. Almost all those gifts were gone, Mains said.

Next year, Mains doesn't plan on too many changes, but she'll try to keep next year's storage facility a secret. "We believe that next year, this won't happen again. We won't look back," she said. "We have faith. We believe in people."
------------------------------------------------------------------------
To donate

Caring 4 Kids is still in need of toys to replace those that were stolen. The group will make deliveries through at least Sunday. Some of the gifts that were stolen were Bratz dolls, Barbies, CDs, Walkmans, CD players, karaoke machines, Atari hand-held joystick games, basketballs and footballs. Some of the gifts were specially requested by ill children, Barb Mains said. "If there's a crying baby [doll] anywhere in Myrtle Beach, we need it for a little girl," Mains said. To donate toys, call 497-5457 or send gifts to 6302 N. Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach, SC 29572.

Blythe not Bratz!

Yeah believe it or not! I did this before. awhile ago...but I wanted to share it..I didn't want it to get "lost in the mists of time" :) Blythe Walking in Light!

MGA rocks again!

Again, when I brought this up with my friends at MGA they have once again come through. Its so sad when kids have to pay the price for adult's actions. Can you imagine being robbed of your mom and then also Christmas in one motion through no fault of your own. Well now they will have a Merry Christmas. :) MGA Rocks!

An inmate asks for help from Santa

I'm writing you on behalf of my four children. They are with their grandparents this year for the Christmas Day and me, their mommy, is incarcerated.
Please help my 3 boys and daughter, ages 8, 10, 10 and 11 (the daughter is 11). She wants the Bratz comforter set with the curtains and the CDs for the Bratz radio I bought her or she says even just the Bratz bike will do. My boys only ask for a Playstation 2 with some games. They all want clothes. The only problem is my parents, their grandparents, do not believe in Christmas. Can you please send them something so they know that Santa didn't forget about (them). Please. I was too late (arriving) here to get any kind of Christmas help for them.

(Editor's Note: The children in question live in Grimes County. Their names have been withheld due to their ages and their mother's situation. For more information, call The Examiner
